Best Dietary Strategies For PCOS

With early diagnosis and intervention one can modify the natural history of PCOS. By adopting a healthy, low-glycemic diet, controlling blood sugar, and maintaining a healthy body weight, those with PCOS can greatly reduce their risk of developing the previous listed comorbidities.
When I was 14 years old I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common endocrine disorders impacting 5% to 10% of women throughout the world. I had no idea what this condition was, how I got it, or what to do about.

PCOS: Beyond Birth Control Pills

I barely even knew how it impacted my body except that it supposedly was the cause for my irregular menstrual cycle, acne, and excess hair growth. I was instructed to take birth control pills for an indefinite amount of time and then my diagnosis was never discussed again.
Fifteen years later, I decided to get a second opinion! I had been hearing about all of the negative effects of using birth control long term, and I did not want to continue taking them if I did not “need” to. After visiting my gynecologist and primary care physician, I received a referral to a top reproductive endocrinologist. He ran a gamut of tests and confirmed the diagnosis of PCOS.
Diagnosis is confirmed if one has 2 of the 3 conditions:
1. Clinical and/or biochemical androgen excess
2. Ovulatory dysfunction
3. Polycystic ovaries
Lab tests that are typically assessed to help confirm PCOS include:
  • Total testosterone- elevated
  • Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone: elevated
  • Fasting glucose: elevated
  • Fasting insulin: elevated
  • CRP: elevated
  • Triglycerides: elevated
  • HDL-cholesterol: decreased
The endocrinologist told me, based on the workup, to stay on the birth control pill and again, end of story.
I decided to do a bit of research on the topic, just to make sure I was doing everything in my power to keep my body as healthy as possible despite the confirmed diagnosis. I have learned a lot about this condition over the past few years and am here to share the wealth!
So, the first question is, “Why should I care?” Why do lifestyle and nutrition practices make any bit of difference after the diagnosis of PCOS? Well, there are wide array of possible comorbidities and symptoms associated with PCOS including:
  • Hirsutism (excess hair growth)
  • Acne
  • Alopecia (balding)
  • Acanthosis nigricans (dark, velvety patches in body folds and creases)
  • Skin tags
  • Menstrual and ovulatory irregularities
  • Increased risk for metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and complications during pregnancy

Diet And Lifestyle Changes – Part Of Treatment

With early diagnosis and intervention one can modify the natural history of PCOS. By adopting a healthy, low-glycemic diet, controlling blood sugar, and maintaining a healthy body weight, those with PCOS can greatly reduce their risk of developing the previous listed comorbidities.
No single therapy for PCOS exists and physicians typically tailor treatment based on the patient’s therapeutic goals and specific symptoms. Common medical treatment modalities include hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills) and metformin. In addition to these treatments, it is vital to modify diet and lifestyle.1
Studies show favorable metabolic effects in women with PCOS after adopting a moderately low carbohydrate diet (40% of total calories).2 Not only does this dietary strategy help improve the metabolic profile, but it also helps to decrease circulating testosterone levels.
Randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials showed that the combination of medical intervention with lifestyle intervention is most effective for improving outcomes associated with PCOS.3
While there is no known “best” diet for the PCOS population, it is vital to address any metabolic or body weight concerns. Therefore, a Mediterranean style, low glycemic, low carbohydrate diet is certainly an effective strategy.4
This equates to plenty of colorful vegetables, a few servings of fresh fruit, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), nuts and seeds, anti-inflammatory oils or fats like avocado, olive, coconut, and grapeseed oil. Moderate intake of lean protein from poultry, eggs, fish, shellfish, dairy and even red meat, and limited portions of whole grains. Avoiding processed foods, fried foods, and added sugars is also an important concept of this diet.

How The Meals May Look?

Breakfast

  • 2 organic large whole eggs scrambled with sautéed in olive oil veggies (mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, etc), 2tbsp melted sharp shredded cheddar
  • ½ cup (dry) cooked oatmeal with stevia, 2tbsp chopped almonds or pecans, sprinkle of cinnamon
  • Smoothie with 1c frozen mixed berries, 1 c baby spinach or kale, ¼ avocado, 1 scoop unsweetened protein powder, 8-10oz water

Lunch

  • Homemade chili with chicken or turkey, beans, stewed tomatoes, and chopped veggies
  • Tuna salad mixed with lite mayonnaise on a whole wheat “sandwich thin” with tomato, lettuce, mustard and sliced onion
  • “Mix up” salad- different greens (arugula, romaine, mixed greens, etc.), sliced radishes, chopped cabbage, sautéed onions or peppers, beets, raw seeds or slivered almonds, top with protein(chicken or tuna or egg salad, beans or lentils, diced chicken, beef, pork, sautéed shrimp, etc.)

Dinner

  • 3-4 oz lean meat with ½ medium baked sweet potato or white potato with >1 cup of steamed broccoli
  • 3-4 oz baked fish with ½ cup cooked quinoa or couscous (whole grain) with >1 cup of roasted asparagus
  • 1 cup cooked spaghetti squash with ½ cup marinara with sautéed veggies and 3-4 oz meatballs or steamed shrimp

Snacks

  • ½ cup cottage cheese with ½ cup sliced peaches
  • celery sticks with 1 tbsp unsweetened peanut or almond butter
  • 1 oz of unsalted nuts or seeds
  • 6 oz plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 hard boiled eggs
  • Carrot sticks dipped in salsa and ¼ c guacamole
Weight loss of 5-10% of total body weight if one is overweight or obese will also help to improve reproductive and metabolic parameters. Monitoring portions and total calories, estimated based on one’s specific needs, will produce desired weight loss.
Studies show that a higher protein (40% of total calories compared to 15% of total calories) can also assist in more weight loss for those with PCOS. In addition, incorporating regular physical activity, including 2-3 strength training sessions per week is helpful for those with stubborn weight loss.
There are nutritional supplements that can be helpful for specific concerns of individuals with PCOS including reducing testosterone, controlling blood sugar, reducing inflammation, improving the lipid profile, and improving fertility.
Overall, having the diagnosis of PCOS means that one should pay close attention to metabolic and hormonal parameters. By changing modifiable factors like food choices, portions, activity, and body weight, one may vastly reduce their risk of developing undesired comorbidities.

If You Have Sciatica or Back Pain, Take This Remedy and You’ll Never Suffer Again!

The term sciatica refers to the pain felt in the lower part of the back, buttocks, and leg(s), which occurs as a result of pinched or irritated sciatic nerve – the largest and thickest nerve in the human’s body. Sciatica is not medically diagnosed itself, but it’s one of the most common back problems nowadays. Besides the debilitating pain, sciatica sufferers also experience tingling and numbness in the leg(s).

Most people try to relieve their sciatic pain with medications which provide only temporary effect. We also must say that when it comes to sciatica relief, a lot of experts recommend exercise and certain yoga stretches as the most effective way to treat this back problem.
But, in this post you’ll learn how to prepare a homemade remedy that will treat your sciatic nerve and relieve your pain successfully.
In case you aren’t sure if your symptoms indicate sciatica, here’s a list of the most common sciatica symptoms.

Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Pain that starts in the lower back or one side of the hip, and radiates to the buttocks and leg(s)
  • Tingling in the leg(s)
  • The pain aggravates as you sit
  • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the foot or leg
  • Difficulty moving and standing caused by stabbing pain sensation
  • Constant buttock pain

Recipe for Sciatica and Back Pain Remedy

Ingredients

  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 200 ml. Milk
  • Honey (to taste)

Preparation

Crush the cloves and then cook them on low heat. While cooking, add the milk and wait for several minutes until it starts to boil. Then, remove it from heat.
If the taste of garlic it too strong for you, add a bit of honey to sweeten. The mixture you get is an incredibly effective natural remedy for sciatic pain relief.

How to Consume

Consume this mixture once a day, and you’ll soon notice improvements in your pain. This is because garlic possesses anti-inflammatory properties which will reduce and prevent swelling of the sciatic nerve.

Kill Sinus Infection Within Minutes, With What You Have In Your Kitchen!

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation of the tissue lining of the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are filled with air, but when blocked, germs can grow within and cause an infection.  Symptoms of sinusitis include fevers, facial pain, and headaches while the most common causes include allergic rhinitis, common cold, deviated septum, and nasal polyps.

There are two types of sinusitis: acute and chronic. The first one typically lasts up to a month while chronic sinusitis may last 12 weeks or longer.
Viruses and bacteria which grow in the air spaces within the bones in the cheek bones, forehead, and between the eyes cause thick mucus and extreme discomfort in these areas.
While antibiotics are the most common remedy for sinusitis, they are not the best one. Namely, they often come with a wide range of side effects.  On the other hand, herbal remedies step in as an ideal solution for this condition.  Check out the one below!

How Apple Cider Vinegar Kills A Sinus Infection

Apple cider vinegar has numerous uses and is considered to be one of the best remedies for many conditions.  It is packed with antioxidants, malic acids, vitamins, and minerals, all of which are helpful in killing bacteria.  ACV binds to pathogens and helps the body flush them out more efficiently. It is effective against fungal, Candida, and viral infections, too.
To get the most of it, make sure you choose raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized, and organic apple cider vinegar, such as Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.
When ingested, apple cider vinegar breaks up the mucus and clears the airways, while its antibacterial content kills off the bacteria responsible for the infection.  Once the mucus is broken down, apple cider supplies the body with nutrients which boost immunity and prevent the infection from re-occurring.
Even though ACV is acidic in nature, it contains electrolytes which balances body`s pH levels and lowers body acidity. Detrimental bacteria or viruses thrive in acidic environment, which means that by creating alkaline environment, ACV prevents the microbes from multiplying.
The mixture above helps alleviate the symptoms, boost immunity, and eliminate all sinus-related problems. Check it out!
Ingredients:
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • ¼ cup of raw apple cider vinegar
  • Juice of 1 lemon wedge
  • 1 tbsp manuka honey
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
Instructions:
  • Mix all the ingredients in a glass
  • Sip the solution while the condition improves or gargle to accelerate your recovery

What happen when Scientists treat cancer with CANNABIS

The Truth About Chemotherapy – Toxic Poison or Cancer Cure?

Do you remember the “Mad Hatter” from Alice and Wonderland? Did you know that the term “mad as a hatter” originated from a disease peculiar to the hat making industry in the 1800s?
A complicated set of processes was needed to turn fur into a finished hat. With cheaper fur, an early step was to brush a solution of mercury compound on the fur to roughen the fibers. This caused the hat makers to breathe in the fumes of this highly toxic metal, leading to an accumulation of mercury in the hatter’s bodies.
This resulted in trembling (known as “hatters’ shakes”), slurred speech, loss of coordination, anxiety, personality changes, depression, and memory loss which eventually became known as “Mad Hatter Syndrome.” This term is still used today to describe mercury poisoning.

Fast forward 200 years, and let’s focus on pharmacists rather than hat makers…

Back in September 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) released a dangerous-drug alert with the title Preventing Occupational Exposures to Antineoplastic and Other Hazardous Drugs in Health Care SettingsThe alert warned that working with chemotherapy drugs and other common pharmaceuticals can be a serious danger to your health.
They were right because on July 10, 2010, the Seattle Times carried the story of Sue Crump, a veteran pharmacist of 20 years, who had spent much of her time dispensing chemotherapy drugs. Sue died in 2011 from pancreatic cancer and one of her dying wishes was that the truth be told about how her on-the-job exposure to toxic chemotherapy drugs caused her own cancer. The list of chemicals Crump worked with included cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, fluorouracil, and methotrexate.

Does Chemotherapy Cause Cancer?

I am not surprised by Sue’s story because one of the effects of chemotherapy is that it actually CAUSES cancer! (Yes, the very thing it is supposed to “cure” it literally causes. Insane, right?)
You may have heard it said that folks who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Well, much like the hatters who went mad from the mercury, when it comes to chemo… pharmacists and other health care workers who dispense toxic drugs shouldn’t be surprised if one day it kills them.
Interestingly, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not regulate exposure to these toxins in the workplace − despite multiple studies documenting ongoing contamination and exposures. Studies reaching back to the 1970s have linked increased rates of certain cancers to nurses and physicians.
Every oncologist knows that chemotherapy drugs cause genetic damage. Due to inadvertent spills, chemotherapy drugs have been found on floors, counter tops, knobs, keyboards, printers, computers, and garbage cans. Most chemo is genotoxic, meaning that it interacts with genes (DNA) and causes mutations. And yes, genetic mutations are a known risk factor for developing cancer, while secondary cancers are a known side effect (actually a “direct effect”) of chemo.
Danish epidemiologists used cancer data from the 1940s through the 1980s to report a significantly increased risk of leukemia among oncology nurses and doctors. In 2009, another Danish study of over 92,000 nurses determined that they had an increased risk for brain cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer.

Playing Chemo “Roulette”

Dr. Glenn Warner (who died in 2000), was one of the most highly qualified cancer specialists in the United States. He used alternative treatments on his cancer patients with great success. On the treatment of cancer in this country he said, “We have a multi-billion dollar industry that is killing people, right and left, just for financial gain.
Their idea of research is to see whether two doses of this poison is better than three doses of that poison.
Dr. Alan C. Nixon, past president of the American Chemical Society writes, “As a chemist trained to interpret data, it is incomprehensible to me that physicians can ignore the clear evidence that chemotherapy does much, much more harm than good.”
And according to DrCharles Mathe, French cancer specialist, “If I contracted cancer, I would never go to a standard cancer treatment center. Only cancer victims who live far from such centers have a chance.”
Truth be told, if a person has one type of cancer and allowed themselves to be injected with chemotherapy, this person will later often develop a different type of cancer as a result. The oncologist will likely claim to have cured their initial cancer even though a second or third cancer developed which was directly caused by the chemo used to treat the original cancer.
The serious toxic effects of chemotherapy have long been ignored by virtually everyone in medicine and the federal government. Chemotherapy  drugs have always been assumed to be safe just because they’re used to treat cancer. This is an outright lie!
The truth is that chemo is toxic, carcinogenic (causes cancer), destroys erythrocytes (red blood cells), devastates the immune system, and destroys vital organs.

Obvious Signs that Chemotherapy is Highly Toxic

Think about it… a person’s hair falls out, their immune system is destroyed, they are constantly nauseous and often vomit. Frequent dizziness is also the norm as are severe headaches. Are these signs that maybe, just maybe chemotherapy  is poison and doesn’t belong in the human body? I’m not a doctor, but I think this is a very, very strange way to “heal” someone.
Chemotherapy is a derivative of the mustard gas used in World War I. As the Seattle Times reported, “A just-completed study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (10 years in the making and the largest to date) confirms that chemo continues to contaminate the work spaces where it’s used and in some cases is still being found in the urine of those who handle it…
Yet drugs (like Tamoxifen) are routinely used to “treat” breast cancer even though the World Health Organization declared Tamoxifen to be a “known carcinogen” in 1996. The level of quackery in the cancer industry is amazing. Chemotherapy doesn’t work at anything other than causing cancer! If you have cancer and are considering chemotherapy, please ask yourself this vitally important question: If chemotherapy causes cancer, how can it also treat or cure cancer?
I absolutely love this quote from Mike Adams…
Treating cancer with chemotherapy is like treating alcoholism with vodka. It’s like treating heart disease with cheese, or diabetes with high-fructose corn syrup. Cancer cannot be cured by the very thing that causes it. Don’t let some cancer doctor talk you into chemotherapy using his (or her) fear tactics. They’re good at that. So next time he insists that you take some chemotherapy, ask him to take some first. If your oncologist isn’t willing to take chemotherapy in front of you to prove it’s safe, why on earth would you agree to have it injected in your body?

Medical Marijuana Effects On The Human Brain: Cannabis May Actually Improve Cognitive Function

A recent pilot study from Harvard University indicates that marijuana use actually improves cognitive performance, or our ability to use the knowledge and information we acquire, according to a news release. The research, though preliminary, provides a counterpoint to earlier reports which have linked weed to everything from reduced blood flow in the brain to an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease.
The news release reported that smoking weed, overall, improved brain function in a variety of ways: Patients answered self-reported questionnaires, which revealed that marijuana could moderately improve clinical state — including reduced sleep disturbance, decreased symptoms of depression, and positive changes in some aspects of quality of life.
To reach these conclusions, researchers examined 24 certified medical-marijuana patients over a three-month period. The team looked at participants’ cognitive proficiency by asking them to complete intelligence challenges, including the Stroop Color Word Test and Trail Making Test.
“After three months of medical marijuana treatment, patients actually performed better, in terms of their availability to perform certain cognitive tasks, specifically those mediated by the frontal cortex,” said lead researcher Staci Gruber, PhD, in the news release.
The brain’s prefrontal cortex is responsible for decision-making and complex behaviors, like planning, Medical Daily previously reported.
Researchers noted that the sample size is small and the initial findings are preliminary; however, the study is ongoing and will continue for the next two years.

The Magical Medicinal Properties Of Cayenne Pepper For Cancer, Digestion, Heart Disease & More

What if there was a common household spice that could rebuild the gut wall to improve digestion, destroy cancer cells, stop a heart attack in its tracks and was useful for weight loss? I’m assuming you’d want to know more about it, right?

The hot fruit of the cayenne plant (“capsicum annuum”) has been used as a superb culinary spice for centuries and may be the most valuable medicinal herb in the entire plant kingdom for many of the reasons mentioned above !
High in vitamins A, C, B complex, calcium and potassium, studies have shown that cayenne can rebuild the tissue in the stomach and the peristaltic action in the intestines. Moreover, cayenne acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs and alternative cancer treatments.
Have you ever gone after the chips and salsa with gusto and then felt flushed while your nose started to run a little bit? Cayenne warms the body and stimulates the release of mucus from the respiratory passages. If you’ve ever eaten a fresh hot pepper, you know it clears the sinuses and causes sweating.
Cayenne peppers raise the body temperature as it stimulates circulation and blood flow to the skin. Herbs that promote fever and sweating are considered to have a diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) action which helps reduce fever and relieves the congestion of colds and sinusitis.
The active ingredient in cayenne is called capsaicin and in 2004, Dr. Sanjay K. Srivastava and colleagues (University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine) treated pancreatic cells with capsaicin. They found that it disrupted mitochondrial function and induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancerous cells without affecting normal pancreatic cells!
The results of the study were published in the April 20, 2005, issue of Innovations Report, in which Dr. Srivastava stated: “Our results demonstrate that capsaicin is a potent anticancer agent, induces apoptosis in cancer cells and produces no significant damage to normal pancreatic cells, indicating its potential use as a novel chemotherapeutic agent for pancreatic cancer
In an article published in Reuters on March 16, 2006, entitled, “Hot Pepper Kills Prostate Cancer Cells in Study,” Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the UCLA School of Medicine asserted: “Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture. It caused 80% of the prostate cancer cells growing in mice to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis.” Researchers in Japan have also shown that cayenne pepper can dramatically slow the development of prostate tumors, and is an excellent addition to alternative cancer treatment for this type of cancer.
And if cayenne’s cancer-fighting capabilities weren’t enough, its effects upon the venous structure and heart are nothing short of miraculous. Cayenne is incredibly nourishing to the heart and has been known to stop heart attacks within 30 seconds.  If you want something in your first aid kit for a heart attack, carry cayenne tincture.
According to Dr. John R. Christopher, “In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in (if they are still breathing) I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water) and within minutes they are up and around.”
In addition to being a welcome addition, there’s also evidence to suggest that cayenne may be useful in the treatment of obesity. Results of one trial showed that consumption of 10 grams of cayenne pepper with meals helped to reduce appetite, while results of another revealed that cayenne increases the metabolism of dietary fats. Lastly, herbalists from centuries past would pour cayenne pepper directly on fresh wounds in order to sterilize and stop bleeding.
Many of us (over 90%) have worms or different parasites in our systems. One simple way to get rid of them is to have a “cayenne drink” daily. Fill up a glass with water or juice and then add 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper. Stir it up and then “down the hatch.” Yes, it’s a bit spicy, but you’ll get used to it.
As you can see, the amazing curative powers of cayenne are almost mind-boggling. Clearly, it is  a “wonder herb” that has scientifically proven its worth!  According to Dr. Richard Schulze, “If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other.”
On a personal note, I take cayenne pepper every day as part of my nutritional regimen and a “preventative” cancer treatment. I also keep a cayenne tincture in the house and in both cars … just in case!
Hopefully this provides you with a good overview of the many amazing medicinal uses of cayenne and you put this information to good use. Until next time, may God bless you.

Epstein Barr Virus Connection to Breast Cancer & Autoimmune Disorders

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common viruses found in humans. In fact, about 50% of children have been exposed at a very young age, and by adulthood, it is believed that at least 95% of the population has been affected.
Along with herpes, shingles, and chicken pox, EVB is part of the herpesvirus family (HHV-4 herpes). EBV can cause mononucleosis (the “kissing disease”) but usually it doesn’t. In fact, that is the problem – most EVB infections aren’t noticeable, even when they are active in the body.
While for most people it poses no serious immediate consequences (other than misery from cold-like symptoms and fatigue), it can pose long-term health consequences…
Once you are afflicted with EBV, it never leaves. It remains dormant throughout life. However, there are many triggers that can provide fuel to viruses and other pathogens in the body so that a dormant virus can take advantage and become reactivated. These triggers include exposure to radiation, pesticides, herbicides, paint fumes, and mold.
They can also be related to nutritional deficiencies, physical injury, toxic heavy metal exposure, and emotional trauma. EBV can get reactivated anytime your immune defenses are down.
Women who have gone through a major life change, such as the death of a spouse or even menopause, may be particularly susceptible to the reactivation of the virus. While reactivation does not always present with symptoms, you may experience fatigue, aching muscles and joints, swollen lymph nodes, and other flu-like symptoms. People with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop symptoms when EBV reactivates.

Epstein Barr Virus & Cancer: What’s the Connection?

What you need to know is that herpetic viruses such as EBV are often behind autoimmune disorders such as lupus, MS, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. And the EBV could even be fueling your breast cancer.
Doctors rarely look to EBV as a cause of illness as the patient is often asymptomatic of the virus. Yet, a person suffering from a thyroid condition, auto-immune disorder, or cancer likely had a case of mono back in the college days that never really left their system. It just took up a new residence within the body and started causing more serious problems. And it is not just mono, but shingles, herpes, and a myriad of other viruses.
For years, researchers have been linking viruses to the development of cancers such as various lymphomasRecently, however, the connection to breast cancer has been found to be incredibly strong.
Studies/Researchers have found that 30-50% of breast cancer patients had EBV. Others put the number much higher, as high as 90%. Some research points to the idea that most of the time cancer is caused in part by a virus.
Yet all too often, patients are told that EBV or other viruses can’t be the problem. This may be because blood tests show antibodies that indicate a past infection, not a present one, or that doctors just don’t think to look for it.

EBV and Breast Cancer

In a study published in EBioMedicine in 2016, researchers led by Gerbury Wulf, MD, PhD, of the Hematology/Oncology Division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, reported that EBV may accelerate the development of malignant breast cancer. The researchers found that breast cells bonded to the Epstein Barr virus and that the virus lowered the threshold for transformation into a particularly aggressive form of cancer.
“We think that if a young woman develops EBV during her teenage years or later, her breast epithelial cells will be exposed to the virus and can be infected. While for most individuals, there will be no long-term consequences, in some the infection may leave genetic scars and change the metabolism of these cells,” explained Wulf. “While these are subtle changes, they may, decades later, facilitate breast cancer formation.”
A study done in 2014 found “a strong association between EBV and breast cancer carcinoma in Sudanese patients, and considerable epigenetic silencing of tumor suppressors that make likely be an outcome or an association with viral oncogenesis.”
The researchers detected EVB in all of the breast cancer biopsies and none in the normal breast tissue biopsies. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Sudanese women, and interestingly, there is a very low frequency of BRCA mutations in Sudanese breast cancer patients.
Another study published in 2015 found an association between EBV and the development of breast cancer. While the study had inconsistent results, the researchers concluded that EBV and other viruses may play a role at a later stage in the development of breast cancer. They also hypothesized that this could explain elevated IgG levels associated with breast cancer.
Others have postulated that just fighting the virus could exhaust or dampen down the immune response, which might help cancer escape immune destruction.
Numerous other researchers have concluded that the role of EBV in the development and progression of breast cancer as well as in autoimmune disorders cannot be overlooked and should be investigated further.
Cancers have a known cause, and this virus is one of them. Therefore, if your medical team is not aware of this connection, you will need to be your own advocate and take control of your care – which is always a good idea.

What You Can Do NOW to Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk

Many natural compounds have the ability to suppress viral activation. Any food, supplement, or essential oil that is considered to be anti-viral and/or antibacterial or which can support the immune system and liver can help.
You likely have many of these beneficial herbs & spices, essential oils, and supplements on hand already:
  1. Cats Claw is powerful against pathogens and viruses.
  2. Cilantro is fantastic for removing heavy metals. It is also antibacterial and antiviral, so it suppresses EBV.
  3. Lemon balm is anti-parasitic, antiviral, and antibacterial, which makes it powerful against EBV.
  4. Licorice root is powerfully antiviral and stops viruses from procreating. It also pushes the virus out of the body creating an environment inhospitable to hosting such viruses.
  5. Parsley is a strong pathogen-fighter and targets parasites, bacteria, and fungus.
  6. Turmeric is the ultimate inflammation fighter, including for inflammation in the brain that occurs as a result of EBV.
  7. Aloe Vera is antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic. Studies have shown it to be useful for targeting the pathogens connected with colon, stomach, and rectal cancers.
  8. Iodine protects the thyroid form viruses such as EBV, so include iodine-rich foods in your diet.
  9. Burdock root supports the liver so it can remove pathogens.
  10. Wild foods (foods found growing in nature without being planted by humans) are amazing. They are packed with adaptogens, meaning they are crucial to helping our bodies adapt to whatever life throws us. Wild foods not only retain the vitamin and mineral levels that nature intended, but they also carry critical survival information and mechanisms in their cells. When we ingest them, we benefit from that protection.
  11. Astaxanathin, lutein, quercetin, and selenium also show powerful protection against EBV activation.
  12. Vitamin E and selenium supplementation is also a good idea as viruses tend to deplete these essential nutrients.
  13. Vitamin B12 helps protect nerves and brain from EBV.
  14. EBV is one of the viruses that trigger NF-kB, and activation of NF-kB has been linked to various cancers. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) has been shown to inhibit NF-kB.
  15. NAC has also been found to be antiviral and offers significant reduction of NF-kB.
  16. Vitamin D also inhibits EBV. And like NAC and ALA, it inhibits NF-kB and reduces the resulting inflammation triggered by EBV. (You will find more remedies at the end of this article.) It is important to note that low vitamin D status hinders the immune system response to EBV and cancer. Further, young people with low vitamin D status and high antibody reactivity to the EBV have an increased risk of developing MS.
  17. Citrus peels have been found to be effective against active EBV. Researchers have found that the d-limonene extracted from the peels suppresses TPA, which is the tumor promotor associated with EBV. Therefore myrtle and lemon essential oils can also be helpful due to the d-limonene they contain.
  18. Myrtle is also antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and contains other chemo-preventive compounds.
  19. Ginger also blocks TPA as well as the expression of EVB antigens, thus blocking viral and tumor activity associated with EBV.

Things to Avoid to Minimize Your Risk of EBV & Cancer

Just as important as “what to eat” is what not to eat. If you have symptoms or believe you have active EBV, you may need to avoid dairy, eggs, corn, and wheat until the situation is resolved. I typically recommend avoiding wheat and corn regardless.
Always avoid unhealthy fats and cooking oils such as canola and soybean oils. And remember that genetic expression is turned on or off by lifestyle factors. What you eat, drink, do, and think determines genetic expression. Take charge of your health and your body will thank you.
Remember that after the initial infection, EBV stays in your body throughout life. It has to be kept dormant, or it can reactivate. And as it is likely that you have been exposed to EBV, it would be prudent to include the above recommendations into your daily or weekly diet. As an empowered consumer, you can reduce your risk of EBV wreaking havoc with your health.
